Y La Bamba

Con La Bamba can be an enigmatic indie folk-pop task fronted and led by singer and songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza. The group’s sound weds Mexican folk designs — from mariachi, nueva cancion, and norteño to American folk-rock and dreamy indie pop. Mendoza sings in Spanish and British. Her parents hail from Mexico. Though created in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, she grew up in Southern Oregon and spent her years as a child summers in California’s San Joaquin Valley with cousins. There Mendoza consumed the melodies, three part-harmonies, and folktales of traditional Mexican mariachis. In 2003, she got a vacation to India where she dropped ill. It had been there that she created the expansive religious world view that could inform her potential music. She shifted 1st to Ashland, where she worked well as a single performer. There she experienced like-minded bandmates and created Y La Bamba. They relocated to Portland and home-recorded an recording entitled Alida St., that was released in 2008. Though acknowledged to Y La Bamba, it had been essentially a Mendoza single work. The Decemberists’ Chris Funk created follow-up Lupon, the band’s debut for Sensitive Caring Empire. By enough time it had been released this year 2010, almost the complete lineup had transformed. Steve Berlin of Los Lobos created, engineered, and performed on 2012’s Courtroom the Surprise. The record drew universally positive important reviews. NPR highlighted the documenting prominently, offering the music group wide exposure. It had been widely considered among 2012’s greatest indie albums. A six-track mini-album entitled Oh Feb was released in early 2013. Y La Bamba toured thoroughly throughout the remaining season and well into 2014. Berlin released Mendoza to Calexico’s Sergio Mendoza (no relationship). The set shaped the duo Los Hijos de la Montaña and released a self-titled Latin-inspired record on Cosmica in middle-2015. The same season, Luz Elena also undertook songwriting partnerships with Lila Downs and Edna Vasquez. Y La Bamba came back to the studio room with Mendoza in the producer’s seat. Dealing with composer Richie Greene to build a fresh, stripped-down sonic palette, she performed electric guitar throughout and used the abilities of regular collaborator Nick Delffs (Shaky Hands, Loss of life Tracks) on percussion. Ojos del Sol was released in Sept of 2016. The record landed at amount 10 for the Heatseekers graph with 20 for the Americana/Folk Album graphs.
