Wulomei

This Ghanian group was formed in Accra by drummers Nii Ashitey and Saka Acquaye in 1973 and became the best band in the country’s acoustic highlife revival of the first to mid-70s. Forsaking electrical guitars and drum products, rings like Wulomei (whose name means ‘Fetish Priest’ in Ga) and Dzadzeloi presented a choir of traditional percussion tools, acoustic guitars and melodically wealthy call-and-response vocals. They liked several successful domestic strikes spread over some early 70s albums. The music group folded in 1976 soon after an ambitious USA tour, but reformed sometimes thereafter.
