Wolfgang Rihm

The prolific composer Wolfgang Rihm’s music is unstable, with wide feeling swings and shocking juxtapositions between harsh utter violence and gentle, beautiful sounds. He started composing at age 11. In 1968, he began monitoring at the Condition Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe where his structure instructor was Eugene Velte. He also went to a special program in Humanities on contemporary structure with composer Wolfgang Fortner and Humphrey Searle, among the best-known English composers using Schoenberg’s 12-firmness program. In 1969, Rihm visited the German middle of avant-garde music, Darmstadt, to wait a training course in songs. He graduated through the conservatory in Karlsruhe in 1972.
