Percussionist Wilson “Chembo” Corniel, Jr. was created in Manhattan on November 22, 1953. The kid of Puerto Rican parents, Corniel was raised on the roads of Crimson Hook, Brooklyn. He demonstrated an early fascination with percussion musical instruments, and was playing congas, bongo, and bata by age 12, and he researched with percussionists Tommy Lopez, Sr., “Small Ray” Romero, Louie Bauza, and Cachete Maldonado. Corniel afterwards perfected his playing abilities on the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in NY with the La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, in 1997 and 1999.
