Willard Cele

Although Willard Cele was created and raised inside a segregated Southern African township, although he was handicapped, and even though he died youthful, his effect on Southern African music was enormous. Cele’s development was to carefully turn a flute or pennywhistle sideways in the mouth area, which produced a “solid” audio and allowed the participant to alter the firmness and selection of the device much beyond its designed capabilities. Cele’s design of playing became specifically well-known after his 1951 appearance in the film The Magic Backyard. Pennywhistlers began to flourish throughout South Africa, where they performed illegally on road corners, preventing the White colored police who wanted to arrest them.
