The brainchild of Norwegian composer/percussionist/keyboardist Lars Pedersen, When has produced a far-ranging body of work dating back again to the first ’80s, running the gamut from thick, dissonant orchestral music to sample-based collages to Seaside Boys-inspired psychedelic pop. With all this range of noises and designs, When’s music is usually remarkable because of its avoidance from the distanced, post-modern pastiche strategy favored by several additional avant-garde collagists, rather demonstrating a darker, even more morbid position evidenced throughout his catalog by such game titles as Death within the Blue Lake, Dark White & Gray, and The Dark Loss of life. When got its begin in 1983, of which period Pedersen was also operating as an associate from the experimental/commercial trio Holy Plaything, an clothing he continued to utilize through the entire ’80s. When’s 1st recording, several years within the producing, was 1987’s Drowning but Learning and originally released on Pedersen’s personal small Witchwood label. This is adopted in 1988 by Loss of life within the Blue Lake, whose name track was a protracted classical-type collection, rendered with a digital orchestra (i.e., by using sampled brass, percussion, etc.) and motivated by writer Andre Bjerke’s suspense/thriller book of the same name. For his following record, Dark White & Gray (1990), Pedersen teamed up with onetime Henry Cow member Chris Cutler, who added lyrics towards the record furthermore to releasing it on his RéR Megacorp label. (Cutler also added lyrics to When’s 1994 discharge, Prefab Wreckage.) When’s following three albums all arrived in the Norwegian imprint Tatra Information. The to begin these, Svartedauen (The Dark Loss of life) (1992), was an album-length collection inspired with the Norway Dark Plague and fittingly symbolizes a few of When’s darkest, most unsettling focus on record. Which was accompanied by Prefab Wreckage (1994), which present When creeping toward a far more song-oriented direction. The 3rd and last When recording released by Tatra was Gynt (1997), motivated by traditional composer Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite. (Tatra also re-released the When debut Drowning But Learning during Pedersen’s years using the label.) Another section in When’s profession started in 1998 using the then-recently shaped Jester Information imprint, that is work by Kyrstoffer Rygg, a lover of Pedersen’s function for quite some time as well as the frontman for the well-known post-black metallic rings Ulver and Arcturus. (Actually, a remix by When shows up around the 1999 Arcturus recording Disguised Experts.) When’s 1st recording for Jester, Psychedelic Wunderbaum (1999), was among the label’s first produces, and it found Pedersen reunited with longtime collaborator Bjørn Sorknes (also a previous person in Holy Plaything). Jester adopted this up with the career-spanning double-disc compilation WriterCakeBox: The Unblessed Globe of When, 1983-1998, which collected together shows from most of When’s produces as much as (however, not including) Psychedelic Wunderbaum, alongside rare compilation-only songs along with a half-hour’s well worth of unreleased materials from Pedersen’s vaults. Following a minor hold off in the creation process, the 3rd When launch for Jester, The Lobster Males, arrived in 2001.
