Wayne Horvitz took piano lessons briefly seeing that a kid. At 13, he received several classical electric guitar lessons; he discovered the design unsuitable and quit. A calendar year later, influenced with the information of blues pianist Otis Spann, he used the piano once again. From that time, he was generally self-taught. Horvitz produced a name for himself within the ’80s by using a number of the leading lighting over the downtown New York-based experimental/improv picture, including Bobby Previte, Butch Morris, Fred Frith, Elliott Clear, among others. His most well-known association was with saxophonist/composer John Zorn as an associate from the latter’s music group, Naked Town. Horvitz-led ensembles included the Leader, the Horvitz/Morris/Previte Trio, and Pigpen. With the middle-’90s, Horvitz acquired moved from NY towards the Pacific Northwest; his principal band became the Seattle-based Zony Mash (Horvitz; Timothy Teen, electric guitar; Keith Lowe, bass; Andy Roth, drums). Their organ-based, groove-oriented music includes some “outside” components, but generally avoids the avant-garde tendencies quality of Horvitz’s NY function. Besides Zony Mash, Horvitz proceeds to execute in various other contexts, leading the Four AND SOMETHING Outfit (Horvitz; Eyvind Kang, violin; Julian Priester, trombone; Reggie W, keyboards; Tucker Martine, consumer electronics and live handling) and Ponga (Horvitz; Bobby Previte, drums; Skerik, saxes; Dave Palmer, keyboards). Horvitz in addition has documented for the Songlines, Knitting Stock, Elektra/Nonesuch, Audio Aspects, and Dark Saint labels. IN-MAY of 2016 he was offered a Doris Duke Musician Award.
