Washboard Sam

A favorite hokum blues artist, Washboard Sam recorded a huge selection of information in the past due ’30s and ’40s, generally with singer/guitarist Big Expenses Broonzy. Of the many washboard players from the period, Sam was typically the most popular, which was credited not merely to his to his washboard skill, but also to his abilities like a songwriter, aswell as his solid tone of voice. As an accompanist, Sam not merely used Broonzy, but also with bluesmen like Bukka White colored, Memphis Slim, Willie Lacey, and Jazz Gillum. Washboard Sam (created Robert Dark brown) was the illegitimate boy of Frank Broonzy, who also fathered Big Expenses Broonzy. Sam grew up in Arkansas and done a plantation. He transferred to Memphis in the first ’20s to try out the blues. While in Memphis, he fulfilled Sleepy John Estes and Hammie Nixon as well as the trio performed street sides, collecting guidelines from passers-by. In 1932, Sam transferred to Chicago. Originally he performed for guidelines, but shortly he started performing frequently with Big Costs Broonzy. Within a couple of years, Sam was helping Broonzy over the guitarist’s Bluebird recordings, and he started supporting a variety of musicians on the recording periods, including pianist Memphis Slim, bassist Ransom Knowlin, and a small number of saxophone players, who all documented for Bluebird. In 1935, Washboard Sam started documenting for both Bluebird and Vocalion Information, often backed by Big Costs Broonzy. Through the entire remaining ’30s as well as the ’40s, Sam was perhaps one of the most well-known Chicago bluesmen, offering numerous information and playing to loaded audiences. In 1953, Washboard Sam documented a program for Chess Information and retired. In the first ’60s, Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim attempted to persuade Sam to come back to the level to capitalize over the blues revival. Originally, he refused, however in 1963, he started executing concerts in night clubs and ccoffee housesin Chicago; he also performed a small number of schedules in European countries in early 1964. Washboard Sam produced his last recordings for the tiny, Chicago-based Spivey label in 1964. The next year, his wellness quickly dropped and he ceased documenting and playing displays. In November of 1966, he passed away of cardiovascular disease.
