Wally Ngonda

Previously the guitarist (and latter-day leader) of Zairean rumba group Anti-Choc, Wally Ngonda released his first solo album in 1995. This came back to the origins of African rumba, though its contemporary recording and demonstration gave the tracks a far more reflective atmosphere. Featuring additional acoustic guitar playing from Azulino and visitor vocals from Sam Mangwana within the name track, somewhere else Ngonda himself dominated proceedings. The rhythms continued to be as infectious because they have been with Anti-Choc, however the sombre delivery and space inside the recordings significantly enhanced its effect.
