Wallace Bishop

Biography

A subtle and supportive drummer who was simply among the finest from the golf swing period, Wallace Bishop (generally known as “Bish”) was greatly underrated by everyone but his fellow music artists. He started playing drums when he was an adolescent and had a chance to research with Jimmy Bertrand. He began playing appropriately in 1926 with Artwork Simms’ Orchestra in Milwaukee. Bishop toured with Jelly Move Morton and gigged with Bernie Youthful, Hughie Swift, Richard M. Jones and Thomas Dorsey. He was with Erskine Tate in Chicago during 1928-30 and was a significant area of the Earl Hines Orchestra (1931-37) where he obtained his reputation. Additional organizations included Jimmie Noone (1941), Coleman Hawkins (1943), Don Redman, Foots Thomas, Phil Moore, John Kirby (1946), Sammy Cost, Sy Oliver and Billy Kyle. Throughout a visit to European countries with Buck Clayton in 1949, Bishop made a decision to completely become an expatriate and he just stopped at the U.S. briefly 3 x during his old age. Abroad, Bishop was quite occupied like a mainstream drummer, carrying out with Expenses Coleman, Don Byas, Ben Webster, Child Ory (throughout a 1956 tour), Earl Hines, Milt Buckner, Friend Tate, T-Bone Walker and a number of top Western players. Wallace Bishop, who just documented two trio amounts like a innovator (for the French Chant du Monde label in 1950), made an appearance on record often like a sideman, especially for the Dark & Blue label in the past due 1960’s and 70’s.
