Violet Archer

After finding a BMus in the McGill Conservatorium in 1936, Archer studied with Bart¢k in NY and Hindemith at Yale, where she earned a MMus in 1949. She’s received many awards and honours, including an honorary doctorate from McGill in 1971. She trained at McGill, North Tx State College, School of Oklahoma and School of Alberta. Her compositons reveal the isolation and vastness of her indigenous Canada, employing lengthy dark shades over energetic rhythms.
