Viola Gertrude Wells

While Herman Lubinsky’s Savoy label is remembered for having recorded such bebop giants as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie at their top, the Newark, NJ-based company also recorded several hometown music artists in the 1940s, one of these being Viola “Miss Rhapsody” Wells. Wells’ initial gig was on the Minis Movie theater in Newark; she caused traveling displays in the ’20s and a particular Banjo Bernie’s Band in the ’30s prior to going on the highway with vocalist Ida Cox. In the past due ’30s, Wells transferred to Kansas Town, where she went a nightclub and led her very own band. She transferred back again to Newark and became energetic on the brand new York scene through the ’40s, performing at various night clubs and theaters, including Kelly’s Stables as well as the Apollo (occasionally performing beneath the name Viola Underhill). Her profession ebbed, after that revived in the middle-’60s. In the ’70s she toured with trombonist/vocalist Clyde Bernhardt’s music group.
