Biography

Vieux Diop (pronounced “Via Jo”) is really a master from the kora, a 21-stringed device indigenous to Western Africa. A previous person in Youssou N’Dour’s music group, Diop offers toured with African percussionist Babatunde Olatunji and jazz music artists Jean Paul Borelli and Roy Brooks. Since emigrating towards the U.S. in 1984, Diop offers lectured and performed at universites and colleges like the Julliard College of Music in NY, which was the website of the weekly series, Western African Trip, that he managed in 1996. Diop acts as host of the biweekly radio display on globe music, Musical Discussions, broadcast by NY radio train station, WBAI-FM. While his music continues to be rooted within the customs of Western world Africa, Diop provides increasingly incorporated modern roots music affects. Cash Box noticed that Diop “…delivers bobbing, weaving, grooves which are undeniable towards the individual pulse.” Furthermore to creating heartfelt melodies in the kora, Diop performs the dissunguni (bass kora) and djembe, and sings in an assortment of traditional African dialects (Wolof, Mandigo and Bambara), French and British. He provides released albums to the united states, you start with his self-titled 1995 debut and carrying on into the following decade.
