AMERICA Air Drive Band, though over 70 yrs . old, may be the youngest from the Washington, D.C.-structured military bands. They have made many recordings, appeared often on radio and tv broadcasts, and provided countless concerts in the home and overseas. The USAFB was founded on Sept 24, 1941, with Alf Heiberg portion as commander and conductor. Primarily, the ensemble contains four players, but grew to 48 within its 1st year and gradually improved its musicianship thereafter. Heiberg was been successful by George S. Howard in 1943. Howard led the music group on its 1st major tour (six Canadian towns), in 1944, shaped an auxiliary symphony orchestra within the postwar period, helped establish the standard hour-long radio display The Air Push Hour, and improved the band’s assets to add a 100-piece marching music group, an 85-piece concert ensemble, along with a 90-piece symphony orchestra. The music group also got a 25-member glee golf club and other smaller sized offshoots.
