Um

Like many jazz ensembles, Um came collectively organically during the period of a matter of years until most of its people were set up. Initially shaped in 1992 like a display for trombonist Hal Crook (Phil Woods, Tony D’Aveno) to provide original pieces made up for the Trom-o-Tizer –a digital results processor chip that harmonized his trombone parts and allowed him to become heard more than a tempo section — the trio, which also presented drummer Bob Gullotti (the Fringe, Surrender towards the Atmosphere), discovered a every week gig within their indigenous Providence, RI. Quickly, their regular bassist was changed by guitarist Rick Peckham. As the weeks wore by, enthusiasts and fellow music artists continued to avoid by to look at the group, whose unique numbers frequently sounded like traditional be-bop tell you a chaos filtration system. Every once in awhile, as Crook performed additional engagements, bassist Dave Zinno (among Crook’s former college students), would replace him for an night. One night, both crossed paths over the bandstand. Zinno was added a long lasting member as well as the music group was a quartet. The music frequently danced the series between free of charge jazz, hard grooves, bebop, and golf swing. As the music group continued, a blast of music artists — including George Garzone, Bob Brookmeyer, and Mick Goodrick — sat along with the group. Ultimately, Medeski, Martin, and Hardwood organist John Medeski (whom Gullotti acquired used in Trey Anastasio’s Surrender towards the Surroundings project) emerged through city. After several performances, the music group made a decision to record several displays for posterity’s sake. The causing gigs — documented on, may 11 and 12, 1999, on the band’s house Membership AS220 in Providence — discovered their method onto disk on Stray Pup, released on Ropeadope Information in nov 2001, the in-house label for the expanded Medeski, Martin, and Hardwood family members. The group — generally without Medeski, who’s associated with myriad various other projects — is constantly on the gig every week in Providence.
