Uhurus

Originally an offshoot from the 50s Ghanaian orchestra, the Broadway Dance Band, the Uhurus were led simply by Stan Plange, who overran the featured guitarist role in 1965. They shortly rose to be among the nation’s most well-known dance bands, blending imported traditional western music whilst also borrowing off their very own ethnic traditions. Through the middle-70s they renamed themselves the fantastic Uhurus and performed frequently at Faisal Helwani’s Sunday Night Shows on the Apollo Membership. By this time around they had documented their debut record for Decca Western world Africa, though they just achieved international reputation in 1991 using a compilation for USA label First Music, which alone drew heavily off their debut.
