John “J-Ski” Powe and his sibling Shawn was raised singing jointly in Lansing, MI. They added John “J.C.” Clay and Demetrius Peete (aka Peete) in senior high school and university; the quartet produced and begun to compose music and rehearse. Shifting to Detroit to record their modern R&B-based a cappella compositions, U.N.V. shortly discovered “Something’s Goin’ On” getting airplay on regional place WJLB.
