Trip Shakespeare

Playing participating and imaginative alternative rock and roll using a pop twist, Trip Shakespeare had been a Minneapolis-based combo who gained a loyal cult pursuing because of their playful but literate, rhythmically inventive music. The band’s tale began in the first 1980s, when Harvard anthropology grad Elaine Harris responded an ad searching for “wicked percussion hands” submitted by English main Matt Wilson, who soon abandon college for music to relocate to his hometown of Minneapolis. Harris and Wilson would discovered Trip Shakespeare, alongside John Munson, a Chinese-language main at the College or university of Minnesota. After issuing a debut LP, 1988’s Applehead Guy, on regional label Gark Information, the record was found for nationwide distribution by Restless Information. Not long following the album arrived, the band extended to add another Harvard pupil, Dan Wilson, a graduate pupil in artwork and Matt’s elder sibling. With an arty audio but unpretentious approach which fascinated new enthusiasts, the music group released their second record, 1989’s HAVE YOU BEEN Shakesperienced?, on Twin/Shade. In 1990, the music group agreed upon with A&M, launching Across the World the same season, accompanied by Lulu in 1991. Both of these major-label albums demonstrated off a shiny melodic design with increasingly restricted production values, offering a nice package deal because of their arcane lyrics and free-ranging instrumentation. Regrettably, neither recording became a significant commercial discovery, and after Trip Shakespeare documented a six-song EP of cover music entitled Volt, A&M declined the task and decreased the music group. (Twin/Tone information would belatedly launch Volt in 1994.) Soon after severing ties with A&M, Trip Shakespeare split up. Elaine Harris came back towards the Boston region, Matt Wilson performed with many Minneapolis-area rings, and Dan Wilson and John Munson became a member of with Jacob Slichter to create Pleasure, later referred to as Semisonic. Dan Wilson would continue to an effective career like a songwriter and single designer, and performed periodic displays with Matt Wilson, two which had been recorded on live albums. In 2013, Wilson was asked to perform using the Minneapolis jazz/rock and roll band the brand new Standards (offering John Munson on bass) for his or her annual Christmas present, and Wilson got a shock for the viewers — he presented Elaine Harris and Matt Wilson, and the entire Trip Shakespeare lineup performed for the very first time since their break up. In 2014, Omnivore Information released deluxe, extended editions from the initial two Trip Shakespeare albums, Applehead Guy and so are You Shakesperienced?
