Biography

Of all members of the initial Dixieland Jazz Band, drummer Tony Spargo (who was simply known by his original name, Tony Sbarbaro, before past due ’20s) had the most important and active profession. We were young in New Orleans, Spargo was area of the regional picture, playing drums using the Frayle Brothers Music group in 1911 and in addition dealing with Ernest Giardina and Papa Jack port Laine. In 1915 he used Merritt Brunies and Carl Randall. He remaining New Orleans in June 1916 to become listed on the initial Dixieland Jazz Music group in Chicago. Spargo will be using the ODJB through most of its years, showing up on the 1st jazz information (“Darktown Strutters Ball,” “Indiana,” “Livery Steady Blues,” and “Initial Dixieland One Stage”), performing using the music group in Britain, and surviving all the turnover before historic group’s established separation in 1925. Very easily the most powerful improviser within the music group, Spargo was a vibrant participant whose inventive usage of the woodblock, cowbells, and cymbals will be quite important, although forgotten by historians in old age. Spargo led an organization beneath the name of the initial Dixieland Jazz Music group in NY into 1927, caused Lacey Young’s Orchestra (1927-1928), freelanced in low-profile careers, and was area of the ODJB reunion of 1936. The drummer will be part of a lot of the later on ODJB re-creations. Furthermore, he performed Dixieland frequently at Nick’s on / off from 1939 in to the past due ’50s, including with Phil Napoleon (with whom he documented), Brad Gowans, Miff Mole, Tony Parenti, Eddie Condon, among others, and documented with Connee Boswell within the ’50s. Spargo, who was simply also a multi-colored kazoo participant, was active until the first ’60s, although he hardly ever led a documenting program under his very own name.
