Inspired by artists which range from John Coltrane and Archie Shepp to Roscoe Mitchell (amongst others), Tony Malaby is really a probing tenor saxophonist who’s more comfortable with both outside and inside playing. A few of Malaby’s function has been extremely avant-garde and still left of middle, although he has already established no issue playing even more mainstream post-bop. The saxman was created in Tucson, AZ, in 1964 and was raised for the reason that southwestern town; Malaby produced his initial trip to NY in 1990, when he was participating in William Paterson University in NJ. It had been in NY that he fulfilled organist Joey DeFrancesco, who utilized him being a sideman for the year. The first ’90s also discovered him using several Charles Mingus ghost rings with reedman Marty Ehrlich, who highlighted him within a music group that included Michael Formanek on bass and Tom Rainey on drums.
