Among the lesser-known acoustic guitar pop rings to emerge from your fertile Athens, Georgia music picture from the 1980s, Period Plaything was formed in 1984 by vocalist/guitarist Bryan Make (formerly of Is Ought Space), ex-Little Tigers guitarist Paul Hammond, bassist Danny Cottar and drummer Rob McMahon. The group preferred a far more rhythmically complicated and danceable sound than the majority of its Athens brethren, with Cook’s unusual, rambling vocals owing even more to spoken phrase performance than typical singing — because of this, Period Toy never appreciated greater than a little but devout cult pursuing, although that group of fans grew exponentially in 1986 when the music group made a included appearance in the documentary Athens, Ga. inside/out, also adding a set of monitors (“Home window Sill” and “Hello there”) to its acclaimed soundtrack LP. As the film helped propel other regional serves to major-label offers, Period Toy had not been as lucky, although they do tour the East Coastline in tandem with fellow Athens performers like Appreciate Tractor as well as the Squalls; in addition they appeared on the “quadruple one” alongside Mercyland, Eat America as well as the Bar-B-Q Killers. A full-length LP documented with manufacturer John Keane was finished but hardly ever released, and in 1987,McMahon resigned from energetic responsibility; Juan Molina changed him on drums until Period Toy divide in 1989. In 1998, Make, Hammond, McMahon and Molina performed a reunion gig before the Athens faithful before coming back Period Gadget to mothballs.
