Thomas Moore

Thomas Moore liked to sing and write poetry, even though at law college in London wrote what and frequently the music to numerous tracks, aswell as the libretto for Michael Kelly’s opera The Gipsy Prince. In 1808 Moore offered what and music for an array of Irish tracks, Irish Melodies. He “lent” through the collections created by Edward Bunting (very much to Bunting’s displeasure) and used serious words and phrases to light melodies. This collection produced Moore popular, and he appreciated many songwriting successes. His reputation was partly because of his personal attraction being a performer. Through this reputation he could revive curiosity about forgotten folk music of his indigenous land. A sufferer of the embezzlement fraud in 1820, Moore survived on his writings until 1846 when disease and depression had taken their toll.
