Thomas B. Allen

Illustrator Thomas B. Allen produced some painterly, impressionistic recording covers spotlighting symbols of nation, bluegrass, and jazz. He was created January 28, 1928, in Nashville, generating a scholarship or grant to Vanderbilt University or college on the effectiveness of his soccer prowess; he quickly used in the Artwork Institute of Chicago, learning alongside potential notables including Leon Golub, Robert Weaver, and Robert Andrew Parker. After a stint in the U.S. Marines, Allen started a freelance illustration profession, taking commissions from publications including Seventeen, McCall’s, and Sports activities Illustrated. While doing work for Esquire in 1959 he illustrated bluegrass great Earl Scruggs. Both became good friends, and in every Allen produced 17 album addresses for Scruggs and musical partner Lester Flatt, including 1961’s indelible Foggy Hill Banjo. Allen continued to work frequently for CBS Information, then the leading label for graphical design.
