The Vandermark 5

The Chicago-based avant-jazz unit Vandermark 5 are led by reedist Ken Vandermark, who founded the group in 1996 with saxophonist Mars Williams, trombonist Jeb Bishop, bassist Kent Kessler, and drummer Tim Mulvenna. The group’s documenting debut arrived early the next year with Solitary Piece Flow within the Chicago-based Atavistic label. The quintet came back in 1998 with Focus on or Flag, and each successive launch garnered the group raising critical compliment. Saxophonist Dave Rempis changed Williams before the Vandermark 5’s third LP, Simpatico (1999). The group became a popular at jazz celebrations, and in 2000 released its 4th record in four years (all on Atavistic), Burn off the Incline. The next calendar year brought their newest installment, Acoustic Machine. The music group then transformed drummers, inviting Tim Daisy because the brand-new guy behind the package. His first record with the music group was 2003’s International airports for Light. The Vandermark 5 continuing performing and documenting prolifically through the entire 2000s, issuing the additional Atavistic releases Components of Style…Exercises in Shock in 2004, Color of Storage in 2005, Discontinuous Series in 2006, and Defeat Audience in 2008; Discontinuous Series marked the very first documented appearance of cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (who joined up with the group pursuing trombonist Jeb Bishop’s departure in 2005) as an associate from the quintet. Four from the band’s Atavistic CDs included reward discs entitled Free of charge Jazz Classics, and highlighted interpretations of music by famous brands Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Julius Hemphill, Sonny Rollins, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The discs had been eventually released as Totally free Jazz Classics, Vols. 1-2 and Vols. 3-4. Alchemia, an enormous 12-CD established documenting the Vandermark 5’s residency (with Bishop contained in the lineup) on the membership of the same name in Krakow, Poland during March of 2005, was released later that calendar year with the Polish Not really Two label. Not really Two also released another live established with the group this year 2010, The Equine Jumps/The Ship IS FULLY GONE, documented live during June 2009 on the Green Mill in Chicago, using the quintet supplemented by Swedish trumpeter Magnus Broo and Norwegian pianist Håvard Wiik, both associates of Scandinavian free of charge jazzers Atomic.
