The Styx

Not to end up being confused at all whatsoever using the famous AOR music group Styx, the Styx released a unitary in 1967. These were in fact associated with Butch Engle & the Styx, a SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA Bay Region folk-rock/garage music group that released a previous solitary (in 1966) on Loma and have been around since 1965. Because of their second and last one, in the Onyx label, the group billed themselves as simply “the Styx.” Both edges from the one, “Hey, I’m Lost”/”Puppetmaster,” have already been reissued in the BeatRocket collection THE VERY BEST of Butch Engle & the Styx, which also offers both sides from the Loma one acknowledged to Butch Engle & the Styx; both edges of the 1964 one with the Showmen, which transformed their name to Butch Engle & the Styx; and almost twelve previously unreleased monitors. It’s all a fairly involved story for a fairly insignificant music group, whose documented repertoire consisted completely of songs created or co-written by Ron Elliott from the Beau Brummels, however, not recorded with the Beau Brummels. Still, “Hey, I’m Shed,” the A-side from the Styx’s lone one, is a reasonably good folk-rock/garage area cross types, co-written by Elliott and Bob Durand, and unsurprisingly similar to the Beau Brummels circa early 1966.
