The vision of Gambian-born and United States-based world music DJ and festival promoter Oko Drammeh, the Soto Koto Music group combined the rhythms of Africa, the musical sensibility of contemporary Euro dance music, as well as the intensity of big band jazz; www.themusicmagazine.com described a functionality with the Soto Koto Music group seeing that “a tinkling device plays the business lead on a tabs on African drums and prospects to African voices and trumpets within the big music group jazz design,” even though www.taobooks.com claimed that this band’s “spectacular percussion and exotic rhythms generate an irresistible desire to dance.” The Soto Koto Music group joined with Western African vocalist Abdel Kabirr to record an recording of tunes and instrumentals, Gumbay Dance, in 1991.
