The Sons of the West

The Sons from the West were a Western golf swing group who played mainly in Amarillo, TX, through the past due ’30s and early ’40s, becoming the Panhandle area’s first significant outfit employed in that style. These were founded in 1936 by fiddler Child Lansford, a cousin of Bob Wills who’d performed using the Tx Playboys for a while. Lansford actually began the group in Fort Well worth but moved these to Amarillo searching for a mainly untapped marketplace for music. The Sons went through 11 users during their brief presence: bassist/lead vocalist Jimmy Meek (who later on assumed management of the group when Lansford departed), metal guitarist Billy Briggs (a forward thinking participant who added a seventh string to his device to be able to play chords), pianist Loren Mitchell, guitarists Freddie Dean and Jess Williams, banjoists Cliff Wells and Jess Robertson, and fiddlers Leonard Seago, Pat Trotter, and Buck Buchanan. They slice an recording for Decca in 1938, which presented mostly pop requirements, and documented through 1941, if they obtained their biggest strike with “Sally’s Got a Wooden Lower leg” on Columbia. A lot of the users had been drafted into Globe Battle II in 1942, placing an end towards the music group. Briggs later performed around the region having a music group known as the XIT Males, which also presented Trotter and Williams, amongst others.
