The Sleepers

Among the earliest SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA punk rings, the Sleepers were also among the initial U.S. clothes to extend the boundaries from the design into what’s acknowledged today as “post-punk.” Offering the deep vocals and inscrutable lyrics of vocalist Ricky Williams (previously a drummer with Criminal offense), the Sleepers’ materials pressured ominous atmosphere, throbbing bass lines, and quirky instrumental shifts that challenged the rigid bash-’em-out constructions of early punk. Especially in their later on times, their recordings appeared forward to components of goth rock and roll, in both Williams’ progressively Bowie-esque vocal delivery as well as the sophisticated guitar textures. The Sleepers’ obscurity is mainly due to their sparse result, which was limited by a 1978 EP, an individual, and a 1981 LP, all on little brands with limited distribution.
