The Sensational Nightingales

The Sensational Nightingales were assembled within the ’40s. In 1957 they made an appearance in the Gospel Teach tour using the Clara Ward Performers and five various other big-name gospel works. Associates included Julius Cheeks (business lead), Carl Coates (bass), JoJo Wallace (tenor), Howard Carroll (baritone), and Paul Gwens (tenor). Their observed strike was “OBSERVE HOW They Done My Lord.” Among the first gospel quintets, they documented and toured through the entire 1990s. A lot of their ’50s and ’60s edges (entirely on MCA reissues) feature the beautiful vocals of Rev. Julius Cheeks. Much like Archie Brownlee, Cheeks gets to an strength that distorts the exact recordings, and his design has been intensely “lent” by Bobby Bland, Wilson Pickett, among others. The afterwards recordings by Charles Johnson are smoother and slicker, but nonetheless top-notch.
