The Royalettes

This Baltimore quartet was something of a connection between the lady group and “sweet soul” styles. Their harmonies had been clearly grounded within the early-’60s gal group approach. However they also benefited from pop-oriented, sometimes grandiose production on the MGM label, where they documented their most effective work. If indeed they occasionally sounded such as a feminine version of Small Anthony & the Imperials’ afterwards recordings, it’s no coincidence. Small Anthony’s manufacturer, Teddy Randazzo, also taken care of the Royalettes, and composed a lot of their MGM materials. The Royalettes produced some obscure singles for Chancellor and Warner Bros. before getting agreed upon to MGM in 1964. Their third one, the lush “It’s Gonna Have a Magic,” was undoubtedly their most effective outing, stopping simply shy of the very best 40. It had been destined to become more discovered, however, with vocalist/songwriter Laura Nyro, who managed to get the title an eye on her 1971 record of soul addresses. In 1982, Deniece Williams had taken the song in to the TOP with her very own rendition. The Royalettes do have another little strike in 1965 with “I wish to Match Him,” but hardly ever dented the graphs once again, although MGM spared no expenditure on their complex productions for the group’s singles.
