The Magic-Tones were one of the myriad Baltimore/D.C. doo wop clothes to emerge within the wake of regional heroes and R&B symbols the Orioles. Based on the profile at Marv Goldberg’s R&B Notebooks site, business lead tenor Joe “Grain” Reed, 1st tenor Arthur “Boxy” Williams, second tenor/guitarist Gene Hawkins, and bass Willie Stokes created the group in Baltimore in 1951. Originally dubbed the Five Kings, they briefly performed because the Dreamers before buying the Magic-Tones. After learning to be a staple from the Baltimore golf club circuit, the quartet in 1952 authorized a management cope with Expenses Robertson and Homer Murray, refreshing off their achievement negotiating an Atlantic Information deal for regional work the Tilters — Robertson and Murray also bequeathed the Magic-Tones a clutch of first songs, included in this “AFTER I Kneel Right down to Pray,” which offered because the A-side from the group’s 1953 Ruler label debut. “HOW WILL YOU Treat Me IN THIS MANNER?” followed several months later, so when neither disk garnered much interest at radio, Ruler halted plans to get a third program.
