The Kingsbury Manx emerged in 1999 in the same NEW YORK indie rock scene that spawned the Archers of Loaf and Superchunk before them. Bandmembers Ken Stephenson (electric guitar/vocals), Costs Taylor (electric guitar/vocals), Ryan Richardson (drums/vocals), and Scott Myers (bass/keyboards) went to middle school jointly in Greensboro prior to going different ways throughout their university years. Stephenson and Myers signed up for creative writing research at Wilmington while Taylor and Richardson both arrived at UNC, Chapel Hill. During trips back, the quartet started writing and documenting the music for the demonstration. The band’s break emerged when Overcoat Recordings owner (and previous Thrill Jockey worker) Howard Greynolds noticed the tape and decided to finance their debut.
