The Howlin’ Brothers

Although they appear to be a bluegrass band, and sometimes incorporate bluegrass trappings and rhythms, the Howlin’ Brothers (who aren’t brothers by birth) are most decidedly an Americana string band, however in a reconfigured 21st century version, incorporating rock and roll, pop, gospel, jazz, R&B, Dixieland, country blues, and who knows what else in to the mix plus a scattering of old-time Appalachian string band materials and approaches. Created in Ithaca, NY at Ithaca University in 2003, the Howlin’ Brothers (Ben Plasse on upright bass and banjo, Ian Art on fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, and Jared Green on acoustic guitar and harmonica; all three talk about vocals and harmonies) created a great, foot-stomping live display and a devoted pursuing in the Ithaca region, then made a decision to relocate to Nashville in 2005 and try their fortune. The group self-released Hill Songs (2007), Very long Hard 12 months (2009), Baker St. Blues (2011), and a compilation of live shows, Old Time On a regular basis (2012), that they offered at displays, before linking with Brendan Benson through a shared friend. Benson got the trio in to the studio room and created the band’s initial national discharge, Howl, including guest areas from Jypsi and Warren Haynes and premiered by Benson’s very own Readymade Information in 2013. Difficulty, again made by Benson, implemented in 2014.
