The Hodges Brothers

Hello there Information producer Willie Mitchell constructed his vaunted home rhythm section around 3 talented Hodges brothers through the past due ’60s: guitarist Mabon (nicknamed “Teenie”), bassist Leroy, and organist Charles. With drummer Howard Grimes (and on a few of Al Green’s edges, MG’s trapsman Al Jackson, Jr.) rounding out the lineup, this skin-tight Memphis quartet laid straight down surging, simmering grooves at the rear of the complete Hi stable through the label’s 1970s heyday: Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Syl Johnson, and Mitchell himself, to mention but several. Mitchell experienced patiently molded the machine from when the Hodges brothers had been in their teenagers (Grimes was a little bit older, having worked well like a sideman at rival Stax through the early ’60s). As the succinctly monickered Hi there Rhythm, they documented the 1976 LP Within the Loose and continued to be a cohesive device well in to the ’90s, offering luxurious support on Syl Johnson’s fantastic 1994 comeback arranged for Delmark, Back the Game. In the mean time, as the Hodges Brothers, they released a 1994 disk called Ideal Gentlemen within the small Velvet Recordings of America logo design that also presented a fourth sibling — Fred — on secrets and veteran spirit vocalist Percy Wiggins on many tracks.
