The Gris Gris

The Gris Gris — named following a particularly powerful voodoo spell you can use for great good or great harm, a Dr. John record, and New Orleans slang for medications — may be the brainchild of Greg Ashley, a Texas-born vocalist/multi-instrumentalist motivated by his house state’s renowned garage-psych. While still in his teenagers, Ashley produced the Mirrors, who released a vinyl-only debut record in 2001. 2 yrs afterwards, the band’s second record, 13 Patient Blooms, pointed just how toward Ashley’s more and more experimental muse. He also started working on single materials while still within the Mirrors; while touring using the music group, he discovered a kindred heart and collaborator in Oscar Michel, bassist for San Francisco’s Rock and roll & Roll Experience Kids. Later in 2003, Ashley transferred to Oakland, CA, and another previous Rock & Move Adventure Child, drummer Joe Haener, finished the Gris Gris lineup. The Gris Gris shortly produced a name for themselves within the Oakland/San Francisco picture; among their friends within the likeminded music group the Cuts delivered a copy from the Gris Gris’ demonstration to Birdman Information, which released Ashley’s single album, Medication Fuck Dream, by the end of 2003 as well as the Gris Gris’ self-titled debut, which found its way to summer months 2004. For the growing season appeared just a little more than a year later.
