The Goofus Five

In 1924 Ed Kirkeby, the supervisor from the California Ramblers, made a decision to form a little group extracted from the bigger orchestra to try out novelties and hotter jazz numbers. Initially known as the tiny Ramblers on its Columbia recordings, the quintet (made up of trumpeter Expenses Moore, Adrian Rollini on the goofus, pianist Irving Brodsky, banjoist Ray Kitchingman who was simply soon changed by Tommy Felline, and Stan Ruler on drums and kazoo) also documented for Pathe because the Five Birmingham Infants and, most prolifically, for Okeh because the Goofus Five. The “goofus” that this versatile Rollini performed sounded just like a mouth area organ or perhaps a melodica but was formed just like a saxophone. The Goofus Five quickly grew in proportions, ultimately to eight items, and Rollini performed just as much bass saxophone as he do goofus. Other music group users included (at numerous occasions) cornetist Crimson Nichols, altoist Bobby Davis, trumpeter Chelsea Quealey, trombonist Abe Lincoln and different vocalists including Ed Kirkeby himself. In past due-1927, when Rollini plus some of the additional bandmembers visited Britain, The Goofus Five continuing documenting domestically with much less distinctive players as well as the design was much less interesting and much more dance music-oriented than jazz. Rollini came back towards the U.S. with time to become on the ultimate recording program (Feb. 28, 1929) from the Goofus Five prior to the name handed into background.
