The Excels

The Excels were a Michigan-based blue-eyed soul group comprising Terry Quirk, Clark Sullivan, a man simply referred to as Ylinon, and unfamiliar members. They documented for Ann Arbor DJ Ollie McLaughin’s Carla label. Five singles — “IT IS NOT Therefore,” “Gonna CAUSE YOU TO Mine Young lady,” “I Wanna Become Totally free,” “California on My Brain,” and “Small Innocent Young lady” — from 1965 to 1968 didn’t make any effect, as well as the group disbanded. Quirk and Sullivan had written a lot of the tracks, except for the ultimate release, “Small Innocent Young lady,” that was compiled by Richard “Snacks” Wylie and Tony Hester. The Excels had been mostly of the total failures for the past due McLaughin’s Carla and Karen brands. McLaughin enjoyed achievement with singles from the Capitols, Jimmy Delphs, Deon Jackson, and outside productions of Barbara Lewis, and it is credited with finding Del Shannon.
