The Chiffons

One of the better early-’60s NY girl groups, merging sassiness and innocence on many of the style’s greatest classics. The Chiffons acquired some singles under their belt if they reached number 1 with “He’s Therefore Great,” whose traditional “doo-lang, doo-lang” riff was appropriated by George Harrison in 1970 for his very own chart-topper, “My Special Lord” (Harrison was eventually ordered to pay for substantial problems to the initial web publishers, though he generally stated the resemblance was unintentional). Their follow-up, Goffin-King’s “One Great Time,” was equally as good, offering killer piano riffs from Ruler herself. Actually trim as just a little Eva monitor, the Chiffons’ vocal was substituted, producing a Best Five hit. There have been a couple various other memorable strikes — “I’VE a Sweetheart” as well as the Motown-influenced “Sugary Talkin’ Man” — and interesting misfires just like the Martha & the Vandellas-inspired “GENUINE,” in addition to some singles released under an alter ego, the Four Pennies. The group documented a substantial amount of material through the ’60s, a lot of it derivative.
