The Blue Hawaiians

Biography

The L.A.-structured Blue Hawaiians shaped in 1994 when bassist/vocalist Mark Fontana, guitarists Mark Sproull and Bron Tieman, and drummer Tom Maxwell did a favor for a pal by playing on the starting of her brand-new nightclub, the Lava Lounge. Both group as well as the membership became favorites with L.A. hipsters, because they mixed retro exotica having a seedy, somewhat dark advantage, and movie director Quentin Tarantino was among the band’s first enthusiasts. The Hawaiians put into their kitsch-noir mystique by declaring to become Wayne Newton’s support music group, moonlighting on some L.A. gigs; it got a year for his or her true identity to become discovered. By that point the group was a fixture at locations just like the Viper Space, the Roxy, the Crazy Kitty, the Derby, as well as the Hollywood Palladium, playing displays independently and with performers like the Brian Setzer Orchestra as well as the Endeavors. By 1995, the Blue Hawaiians had been also developing the studio room side of the band, appearing for the Del-Fi collection Pulp Surfin’. The next year they made an appearance for the label’s Photos at night compilation, and by 1997 documented Live in the Lava Lounge. The group documented their 1st full-length studio recording, Sway, in 1998, and released their major-label debut Savage Night time the next yr with fresh guitarist Gary Brandin and keyboardist Eric Godal. Alongside playing live and documenting, the Blue Hawaiians also made an appearance within the BBC documentary Background of Rock and roll & Move and in PBS’s retelling of browse icon Mickey Dora’s existence, Searching for da Cat.
