The Bently Boys


Little to there is nothing known concerning this ’20s folk group, though their sharecropping saga “Straight down on Penny’s Plantation” (recorded in 1929 for Columbia) was later on adapted by many folk revivalists including Bob Dylan (retitled seeing that “Maggie’s Plantation”). Dylan probably learned the melody after it had been included on Harry Smith’s 1952 folksong compendium, Anthology of American Folk Music.
