Biography

Country-pop singer/songwriter/keyboardist Terri Gibbs enjoyed some success in the first ’80s before time for the gospel music she was raised with. Gibbs was created in Miami in 1954 and elevated from age group one in Augusta, GA; blind from delivery, she considered music young, initial playing the piano of them costing only three years previous. Furthermore to gospel music, she paid attention to early rock and roll & move, pop, and spirit (especially Ray Charles), and enjoyed the Grand Ole Opry radio present. She sang in choirs and skill contests while we were young, and fulfilled Chet Atkins backstage at one present. At his demand, she delivered him a demonstration tape, with 18 implemented his information to try her good luck in Nashville. She didn’t possess much luck getting record businesses, and instead transferred to Miami, where she performed keyboards within a music group called Sound Aspect. In 1973, she quit the music group to attend university, but fell out following a year to spotlight songwriting. She came back to Augusta, shaped her own music group in 1975, and performed locally for another many years. Her demonstration tape discovered its way in to the hands of maker/songwriter Ed Penney, who authorized her to MCA in 1980. The name cut of Gibbs’ TOP debut recording, Somebody’s Knockin’, was a significant crossover strike in 1981; not merely achieved it reach the united states Top Ten, in addition, it just missed identical territory for the pop part, and climbed in to the Best Five over the adult modern graphs. The follow-up, “Full Man,” was a high 20 nation strike, and Gibbs was called the ACM’s Greatest New Feminine Vocalist, also earning the CMA’s inaugural Horizon Prize (for artists increasing to new degrees of prominence). Nevertheless, while Gibbs charted with two even more albums (1981’s I’m a female and 1983’s Over Easy), neither matched up the achievement of her debut. Furthermore, she maintained two more Best 20 nation strikes in 1982’s “Ashes to Ashes” and 1983’s “Anybody Else’s Center but Mine,” but nothing at all on the amount of “Somebody’s Knockin’.” Still, she embarked on a high-profile tour with George Jones over 1981-1982, frequently duetting on-stage with him. Gibbs spent many years off-record, after that switched to the type of nation gospel music she’d began singing. She came back in 1987 using the Grammy-nominated CHANGE; “Unconditional Appreciate,” “Ease and comfort individuals,” and “Guaranteed Land” had been all successful over the CCM graphs. After 1990’s Great Time, on the tiny Morning hours Gate label, Gibbs still left music to focus on her family.
