Respectable internationally being a composer and conductor, and recognized on her behalf contributions simply because an educator and advisor to arts organizations, Tania León has generated a distinctive and sophisticated musical style. After completing her research at the Country wide Conservatory in Cuba, León transferred to NEW YORK in 1967. On the invitation of Arthur Mitchell, she became a founding person in the Dance Theater of Harlem in 1969. Because the group’s initial musical director, a posture she kept until 1980, she set up the group’s music section, college, and orchestra. For the Dance Theater she made the ballets Shades (1970), The Dearest (1972), Haiku (1973), and Dougla (1974). She instituted the Brooklyn Philharmonic Community Concert Series in 1978, and since that time provides conducted essential American orchestras (Louisville Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, etc.) and well-known orchestras in Germany and Johannesburg. The 1980s had been an interval of high creativeness. During that period she made up the powerful Concerto Crillo (1980); incidental music to Wendy Kesselman’s play, Maggie Magalita (1980); music for Robert Wilson’s three-act The Golden Home windows (1982); the piano concerto Kabiosile (1988), referred to by León like a salute “to my ancestors and the energy they offered me to accomplish what I’ve chosen to accomplish — that is music” and which demonstrates the Afro-Cuban, Spanish, French, and Chinese language cultural mixture of her birthplace; Center of Ours — A BIT (1988), with text messages by R. Sandecki and American Indians, commissioned from the Vietnam Veterans’ Theatre Company, along with other items. From 1993 to 1997 she was SONGS advisor to the brand new York Philharmonic, and offered as Latin American Music consultant towards the American Composers Orchestra until 2001, co-founding the award-winning Sonidos de las Americas event. In 1998 she kept the Fromm Residency in the American Academy in Rome. Within the 1990s, she developed Carabalí (1991), an orchestral extravaganza with Cuban rhythms, jazz, Stravinsky-like timbres, and soaring melodic lines, as well as the broadly performed Em virtude de Viola con Orquesta (1994). In 1994, León’s earthy, rhythmic, nostalgic opera, Scourge of Hyacinths, was premiered in the Munich Biennale, and it has since been provided in Geneva, France, Austria, and Mexico Town.
