Named following a Bambara phrase signifying “to walk, ” Tama includes Malian vocalist Tom Diakite, percussionist Djanuno Dabo of Guinea Bissau and London-based producer/multi-instrumentalist Sam Mills. The trio fulfilled when they had been using the hypnotic Bengali performer Paban Das Baul, with whom Mills acquired collaborated previously on albums like True Glucose. Having some more time on the documenting studio resulted in the group creating impromptu tracks that integrated Diakite’s Western African musical history and Mills’ origins in pop, avant-garde and globe music, which extend back again to his times in 23 Skidoo in the past due ’70s and early ’80s. The group’s debut recording Nostalgie premiered in 1999 within the RealWorld label.
