Talking Pictures

Vancouver is well known because of its innovative jazz and creative music picture, and Talking Images is a music group that exemplifies that scene’s exploratory nature. Shaped in 1993 by guitarist/composer Ron Samworth, the ensemble’s audio is very much indeed that of a collective, with similar emphasis directed at all of the players. Samworth provides offered as co-artistic movie director from the Vancouver-based New Orchestra Workshop Culture, as well as the various other musicians in Speaking Images — trumpeter Costs Clark, cellist Peggy Lee, and drummer Dylan truck der Schyff — possess all been people from the Society’s personal ensemble, the Today Orchestra. In live performances, Talking Pictures provides performed music for cabaret and theatrical tasks, including functions of Weill and Brecht, as the quartet’s initial two CDs in the Crimson Toucan label, Ciao Bella (1995) as well as the Mirror Using a Storage (1997), have highlighted compositions by Samworth, Clark, and truck der Schyff (plus Robin Holcomb and Ornette Coleman addresses) bridged by collective improvisations. The music on these CDs invites evaluation towards the small-group function of performers in the brand new York downtown and Montreal “musique actuelle” neighborhoods through the ’90s. Humming, a Compact disc by Talking Images in cooperation with Dutch saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra (and offering Dijkstra compositions), premiered on Songlines in 2000.
