Home / Biography / T.O.K.

Using their generally tough stance, it’s hard to trust how the reggae dancehall crew referred to as T.O.K. was originally influenced by crooners Boyz II Males, but that is the way it had been. Alistaire McCalla, Roshaun Clarke, and Craig Thompson had been all in the institution choir at Kingston’s Campion University, while friend Xavier Davidson went to Calabar SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. The four performers started T.O.K. — the acronym originally stood for Contact of Klass — in the first ’90s, when Motown’s glee golf club foursome had been sweeping everything just before them making use of their harmonies. T.O.K. started by carrying out R&B addresses, but that undoubtedly transformed. As Davidson described, “We’re Jamaican. Which has to turn out within the music, and that is what happened, steadily.” The quartet qualified with Jamaican vocal trainer Georgia Guerra, performed a whole lot of senior high school celebrations, then graduated towards the resort circuit on Jamaica’s costly North Coastline, where they’d inject just a little spice in to the displays by covering a Bob Marley music or Ini Kamoze’s “Popular Stepper.” In 1993, they positioned second within the annual Tastee Talent Competition. Though they didn’t earn, the look of them helped provide them to Nuff Information, where they documented a few paths for the label, although nothing at all hit the graphs. By 1996, these were on Sly & Robbie’s Taxi cab label, where in fact the one “Strike Them Great” appeared, once again making no true impact. Following that it was to Primary Road, where they came across engineer Richard Browne, who was simply about to begin his very own label. T.O.K. opted to opt for the engineer, who was simply just a few years over the age of these were. Their initial work for his brand-new VISIBLE label proceeded to go nowhere, however the follow-up, “Hardcore Fan,” which teamed them with dancehall queen Female Saw, increased to number 4. Although VISIBLE didn’t last, the pairing of Browne and T.O.K. provides. He became their supervisor and often created their information. And it appeared as if they can do no incorrect, releasing some singles like “Whoa” and “Sick Nana” that held crashing in to the graphs. But right now their design was definately not where it acquired begun. They can still harmonize and sometimes would on monitors, but dancehall acquired become a very much bigger impact and their audio had transformed harder — hardcore dancehall, actually — influenced similarly by Jamaican noises as well as the U.S. hip-hop on MTV. That it had been well-received was obvious in 1998, when “Eagles Cry” (a nod to Prince’s “When Doves Cry”) gave the music group their initial number 1. In 2001, T.O.K. released My Staff, My Dawgs independently X.C.A.R.R. label, with a lot of their strikes included. Their 2005 work, Unknown Vocabulary, would feature the strike ballad “Footprints” plus a visitor appearance from Miami rapper Pitbull. THE WORLD followed in ’09 2009.
