T.J. Fowler

Born Sept 18, 1910, in Columbus, GA, close to the Alabama state line, T.J. Fowler experienced three brothers who, like him, had been anointed at delivery with initialized 1st titles: E.J., F.C., and K.C. At age six, small T.J. relocated with his family members to the commercial boomtown of River Rouge, MI. After learning piano in the home with the Detroit Conservatory of Music, Fowler started offering musical entertainment for customers at his father’s pool hall. His first professional engagements had been with rings led by saxophonist Man Walters and trumpeter Clarence Dorsey. Fowler put together his own warm small group in 1947 and followed saxophonist Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams on that artist’s 1st recordings for the Savoy label. T.J. Fowler started making records like a innovator in 1948, you start with little labels like Heaven and Feeling and getting his own agreement with Savoy in 1952, occasionally featuring performers Freddie Johnson, Alberta Adams, and Floyd “Bubbles” McVay. Fowler’s ensemble was also utilized to back again vocalist Varetta Dillard and guitarist Calvin Frazier. Close to the end of 1953 Fowler got his work to Chicago to polish what are thought to have been the only real recordings he available beyond Detroit. Issued in the Expresses label, these edges were shown as by “T.J. Fowler as well as the Music group That Stones the Blues.” Back Detroit, Fowler and his guys served because the support music group for T-Bone Walker and spent another couple of years gigging across the Electric motor Town and southeastern Michigan. By the finish from the 1950s, Fowler was surviving in the commercial town of Ecorse (simply south of River Rouge), where he went his tiny indie Bow record label and led a jazz body organ combo. Employed in 1959 with the fairly inexperienced Berry Gordy, Fowler used his music sector know-how and managerial knowledge to greatly help Gordy make and create the Motown record label. Fowler continuing gigging along with his jazz music group but ultimately ceased performing entirely, operating a landscaping design program and settling into semi-retirement being a businessman in Detroit, where he passed on on, may 22, 1982.
