Sven Einar Englund

Einar Englund’s music evinces a number of stylistic assets and a catholicity of nature that rival those of Igor Stravinsky, among the composers who influenced him most. Among contemporary Finland’s most renowned composers, Englund was created for the Swedish isle of Gotland in 1916, and resided there for a lot of his existence. He passed away in 1999. Englund’s teaching included stints in both U.S. (he researched with Copland in the Tanglewood Event) as well as the Soviet Union. He was mentioned as an educator so that as a music critic to get a Helsinki daily newspapers as well for his compositions. Currents of Bartókian folk modalism, Stravinskian Neo-Classicism, and an extremely Shostakovich-like confluence of irony and eloquence all movement through his music. Another impact he stocks with Stravinsky can be that of jazz — but whereas most Western composers gained just a secondhand gratitude of jazz, Englund surely got to understand the music well, operating like a jazz pianist in the 1940s and 1950s.
