Sunroof! was the new-millennium guise of U.K. guitarist Matthew Bower, a longtime veteran from the experimental noise-rock picture. Bower had started his career having a short-lived music group known as Pure, which mutated into Total in 1982; five years later on, Total transformed in to the prolific Skullflower, which demonstrated the best-known of Bower’s automobiles. Skullflower switched Total right into a mainly solo side task having a free-improvisation bent, which ultimately became Bower’s primary concentrate. The Puff Daddy-affiliated R&B group Total laid unique state to the moniker in the past due ‘90s, of which stage Bower retired it and continuing on — in quite similar style — beneath the fresh name Sunroof!. Sunroof! held a lot of the monolithic, droning sound that Skullflower was known — educated principally by psychedelia and early commercial music — but additionally followed the greater ambient, free-form path of early-’90s Total and past due Skullflower. With Sunroof!, Bower also appeared to make even more conscious efforts at sonic variety, differing the moods of his extended items and incorporating suggestions of English folk and cultural music while upping the classic electronics and discovered sounds. Sunroof! began carrying out circa 1997, shortly after the formal pension of Skullflower; like Total, it had been essentially Bower plus whatever affiliates were open to visitor. The music group made its documented debut with 2000’s double-CD Delicate Autobahns Under Structure, a trio discharge for VHF that highlighted two of Bower’s Total/Skullflower cohorts: reed participant John Godbert and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Neil Campbell (also of Vibracathedral Orchestra). Present Star Sound implemented later that season, having been documented mostly on the previously London-based Bower’s house in Cumbria, a rainy, rural region in northwestern Britain. Its pastoral, home-recorded experience and tips of acid-damaged folk drew evaluations to post-rockers Traveling Saucer Strike. A vinyl-only established known as Sad Frog Blowing wind made an appearance on Giardia in early 2001, comprising two side-long parts. Issued afterwards that season by VHF, the greater prominent Bliss was another double-CD established with a helping ensemble that included Campbell, Rosalie Bower, guitarist Richard Youngs (another Total/Skullflower contributor with intensive credits of his very own), as well as the people of Newcastle avant-noisemakers Jazzfinger. Sunroof! also made an appearance in the VHF live compilation Freak On!, including additional paths from cohorts Richard Youngs as well as the Vibracathedral Orchestra. Bower’s very own Rural Electrification Plan label subsequently released archival choices of live Sunroof! materials, spanning the group’s whole career up compared to that stage; these collections, including Slipstream and Temple Music, Vols. 1 & 2, had been available just in CD-R type. The more formal release Cloudz made an appearance on VHF in 2003, and proclaimed a move toward a softer, even more serene make of trance-rock. It had been associated with the group’s initial U.S. performances late in the entire year, which created the limited-edition CD-R USSA.
