Subtropic

Begun in 1992 within a SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA warehouse collective including Spacetime Continuum and Scott Hardkiss, Subtropic is really a one-man production group headed by Jake Smith. Later on located in another seaside vacation resort — Brighton, Britain — Smith in the beginning worked in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA mostly like a DJ, playing displays at the same warehouse space he known as home. A continuing romantic relationship with Spacetime’s Jonah Clear resulted in Smith documenting for Sharp’s important Reflective Records; right before departing for Uk climes, Smith documented tracks that have been released because the Thrub EP in early 1994. Spending all of those other 12 months consolidating his foundation in Britain, Smith came back to Reflective for 1995’s Crazy Cards EP and his first full-length, Homebrew. Among the 1st jungle albums provided wide issue just in the us, Homebrew added a stark minimalist slant towards the drum’n’bass field, with dubby basslines and skewed rhythms that sounded a little off-kilter actually for jungle. Smith later on relocated to Fused & Bruised for his second recording Compression Stage, and continuing DJing greatly. He’s also documented for Disturbance and Helix.
