Best known being a sideman in Chick Corea’s Roots and many various other famed jazz ensembles, Steve Wilson developed his liquid style and flexibility through many years of research, touring and program work with performers want Jon Hendricks, Ellis Marsalis, Don Byron, the Mingus Big Music group, Out of nowhere and Frank Foster. By the first ’90s, Wilson was moving from his own being a head, issuing some albums for the Criss Combination label. With the middle ’90s his function began to receive increasing critical compliment — in 1997 and 1998 he was called within a Downbeat critics poll being a “skill deserving wider identification” for both soprano and alto saxophone. Two tasks in the past due ’90s specifically highlighted Wilson’s talents; Avashai Cohen’s 1998 record, Adama, was a lovely exploration of Middle Eastern sensuality that frequently appeared hung on Wilson’s shiny and moving sax lines. His very own 1999 task for Concord information, Generations, demonstrated off Wilson’s versatility, by combining a multi-generational ensemble of players, including Ben Riley, Ray Drummond and Mulgrew Miller. Passages made an appearance the following season.
